Sweets Rally In 8th, Beat AppleSox
/The Walla Walla Sweets scored two runs on three consecutive hits to defeat the Wenatchee AppleSox, 4-3, on Friday night at Borleske Stadium.
Riley Sinclair struck out six in six shutout innings for season highs in both categories. Enzo Apodaca led the offense with a 3-for-4 night for his third three-hit game of the summer.
The AppleSox scored first for the fourth straight game but lost for the first time in that span. Joichiro Oyama walked, stole his West Coast League-leading 31st bag of the summer and scored on a groundout by Matt Halbach in the third to open the scoring. Oyama scored his 45th run of the summer and now sits two runs away from tying the WCL’s single-season runs record.
Apodaca led off with a double off the right-field fence and scored on a two-out single by Grant Sherrod in the fourth after the Sweets tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third.
A solo home run in the sixth tied the game up before Walla Walla’s two-out rally in the eighth. Wenatchee nearly tied the game up in the bottom of the ninth, loading up the bases with one out. Oyama lined a ball sharply to the third base side that was snared and resulted in a force out at third as a run scored. That was all that Wenatchee would get as a groundout ended the game.
