Three UCLA freshmen-to-be will join the AppleSox this summer, and two of the players had fathers who played professionally.

Three UCLA freshmen-to-be will join the AppleSox this summer, and two of the players had fathers who played professionally.

WENATCHEE, Wash. – After finding success with future UCLA right-hander Griffin Canning and reliever Nathan Hadley a summer ago, the Wenatchee AppleSox will once again sport multiple Bruins-to-be, Head Coach AJ Proszek announced Tuesday.

Brian Gadsby, a right-handed pitcher from Crescenta Valley High School in La Crescenta, Calif., Tyler Nevin, an infielder from Poway High School in Poway, Calif., and Daniel Amaral, an outfielder from Huntington Beach High School in Huntington Beach, Calif., will look to follow in the footsteps of future Bruins who have played in Wenatchee.

“UCLA has given us some quality arms in the past,” Proszek said. “Hadley and Canning were both great arms for us, threw a lot for us, and I enjoyed their presence. Coach [John] Savage does a great job of bringing in quality kids and players to his program and continues to send those types of guys to Wenatchee.”

Amaral and Nevin are both sons of former Major Leaguers Rich Amaral and Phil Nevin. Amaral played for the Seattle Mariners from 1991-98 and spent eight of his 10 Major League seasons in Seattle, before finishing his career in Baltimore. Phil Nevin played for Houston, Detroit, Anaheim, San Diego, Texas, Chicago (Cubs), and Minnesota during his 12-year career. Amaral played collegiately at UCLA and Nevin is currently the manager of the Reno Aces, the Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Gadsby will join the AppleSox pitching staff in 2015. He is known for his signature side-arm type delivery.

“I expect nothing different from him than I did from Canning or Hadley,” Proszek said. “I’m really looking forward to watching him perform and work hard this summer.”

Nevin will be a versatile piece of the AppleSox infield in 2015.

“I talked to him on the phone and I’m really fired up because he seems like a really well-rounded individual,” Proszek said. “Talking to Coach Savage, he said he was going to send me three guys who would be a perfect fit for the AppleSox and the way we go about it, so it’s nice to keep that going.”

Amaral enters the summer as one of the AppleSox three main outfielders.

“I’m definitely excited,” Proszek said. “Anyone who was a dad in the professional system usually has better knowledge as to how to go about it, how to work, and how to play the game. I expect him and Tyler [Nevin] to bring some of that presence to the team and I’m sure guys will be interested in hearing some of the stories and all of that.”

The AppleSox two newest additions are from Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene, Head Coach AJ Proszek announced Tuesday.

The AppleSox two newest additions are from Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene, Head Coach AJ Proszek announced Tuesday.

WENATCHEE, Wash. – The Wenatchee AppleSox will add two players – one from Northwest Nazarene University, and another from Central Washington University – Head Coach AJ Proszek announced Tuesday.

Andrew Helmstadter, a sophomore catcher from NNU, and Dustin Hamilton, a junior left-hander from CWU will bring some collegiate baseball experience to the diamond this season.

Helmstadter, a native of Palm Desert, Calif., will settle behind the dish for the AppleSox in 2015. He played his high school baseball at Desert Christian Academy.

“Coach [Jason] Krohn, who was with the AppleSox last year and is the recruiting coordinator at NNU, gave me a call,” Proszek said. “Andrew and Colton [Loomis] will be together a little bit and have a chance to get comfortable, and it makes that transition a little easier. Coach Krohn recommended him and knows what kind of kids we’re looking for, on and off the field, and Andrew will be a great addition.”

As of April 4, Helmstadter is batting .331 and has started 37 of NNU’s 38 games. He ranks third on the Crusaders with 48 hits, and leads the team with 15 doubles. He has driven in 28 runs, and belted two home runs. He also is tied for fewest strikeouts amongst NNU’s everyday starters, with 19.

Hamilton, a native of Castle Rock, Wash., just south of Cowlitz, is slated to be the lone southpaw in Wenatchee’s rotation. He was previously at Hawaii Pacific University.

“I talked to Dustin on the phone briefly,” Proszek said. “He’s really fired up. I know Coach [Rob] Hippi was really high on him. He’s a really likable kid with a great arm. I’m excited to have him with us.”

Hamilton, a First Team All-State selection and Trico League MVP at Castle Rock High School, owns a 4.30 ERA and a 1-1 record through eight appearances and five starts for the Wildcats. He has struck out 22 batters over his 23 innings of work this season.

AppleSox Add Three from UC Irvine

UC Irvine will continue to provide the AppleSox with top talent in 2015, Head Coach AJ Proszek announced, Tuesday.

UC Irvine will continue to provide the AppleSox with top talent in 2015, Head Coach AJ Proszek announced, Tuesday.

WENATCHEE, Wash. – The Wenatchee AppleSox are set to rotate three UC Irvine Anteaters through the lineup and rotation this season, Head Coach AJ Proszek announced Tuesday.

Keston Hiura, a freshman outfielder, Mitchell Holland, a junior infielder, and Sean Sparling, a sophomore right-hander, will all head north to Wenatchee this summer.

Hiura, a native of Valencia, Calif., will patrol the outfield at Paul Thomas Sr. Field this season. He played high school baseball at Valencia High School.

“Most guys like Keston are just eager to come in and get better and eager to work hard every day,” Proszek said. “We continue to get nothing but the best individuals and talent that we’re looking for from UC Irvine.”

Hiura was the 2014 Foothill League Player of the Year a season ago. He was also Valencia High School’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year and selected All-CIF Southern Section First Team. He hit 14 home runs as a high school senior and had 48 hits. Hiura scored 43 times and drove in 30 runs.

Currently UC Irvine’s leading hitter, Hiura is batting .363 and has started all 24 games for the Anteaters. He sports a team-best 33 hits, with four home runs, 18 RBI, six doubles, and two triples. Defensively, he has recorded 47 putouts, with two assists and just one error.

Holland, a native of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., will be a part of the AppleSox infield in 2015. He was previously at Saddleback College in California.

“Coach [Mike] Gillespie said this is a guy you’re really going to want to keep an eye on,” Proszek said. “He’s big, physical, and will probably be a power guy in the order. He said he can’t wait to get up here and get summer ball started.”

Last season, Holland was the 2014 Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year at Saddleback College and voted the team’s Most Valuable Player. He also earned the Orange Empire Conference Gold Glove while hitting .321 with 22 runs scored on 45 hits. He had seven doubles, one three-bagger and hit three round-trippers.

Holland ranks amongst the top-three hitters for UC Irvine. Currently, he owns a .315 average with five doubles, a triple, and four RBI. He has a .989 fielding percentage.

Sparling, a native of Whittier, Calif., will join the AppleSox bullpen. He played his high school baseball at La Habra High School.

“He’s a competitor,” Proszek said. “Coach Gillespie talked highly of him, along with the rest of the staff.”

Last season, Sparling saw time in seven games for the Anteaters, hurling 6 1/3 innings while striking out seven. He allowed only one walk and surrendered seven earned runs.

Sparling has a 0-1 record with a 5.60 ERA through 10 relief appearances. Through 17 2/3 innings, he has struck out 10 batters and walked seven.

Seattle U Sends Two to Wenatchee

The AppleSox will add a pair of arms from Seattle U to their roster this season.

The AppleSox will add a pair of arms from Seattle U to their roster this season.

WENATCHEE, Wash. – After having a catcher from Seattle U on the roster a year ago, the AppleSox will try their hand with two Redhawk aces this summer, Head Coach AJ Proszek announced Tuesday.

Chris Carns, a freshman right-hander and Justin Marsden, a high school arm, are the two newest faces to join the 2015 club.

Carns, a native of Federal Way, Wash., will help anchor the AppleSox bullpen in 2015. He played high school baseball at Decatur High School.

“I got a chance to talk to coach Elliott Cribby about him,” Proszek said. “He had nothing but great things to say about Chris. He’s a great, quality kid and pitcher. He works hard and has a chance to be an upper-80s, low-90s arm for Seattle and is going to be a quality arm in their bullpen. I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Carns held a perfect record atop the hill for the Decatur Gators during his senior season. He went 8-0 en route to an All-Conference selection, while the Gators placed fifth in the WIAA 3A state baseball tournament.

He owns a 3.24 ERA in 8 appearances for the Redhawks this season. In his first year of college baseball, he has thrown 8 1/3 innings, and surrendered only 3 earned runs. He has a 6-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Marsden, a native of Auburn, Wash., will join the AppleSox out of high school. He current plays at Auburn Mountainview High School.

“Justin will be another young arm for us,” Proszek said. “Hopefully he will bring some added energy to our bullpen. It’s helpful that he has a teammate coming from the D-I level because this year we have a couple more guys from D-II, high school, or that are transferring on our roster. I’m excited to coach him.”

Last season, Marsden threw a team-best 58 innings and struck out 73 batters while walking only 31. He gave up 37 runs, but only 17 were earned on 42 hits.

Marsden’s 2015 high school season opens Saturday, March 4.

AppleSox Add Two More From Gonzaga

Gonzaga freshmen Gage Burland and Nick Nyquist will join the AppleSox this summer, Head Coach AJ Proszek announced, Tuesday,

Gonzaga freshmen Gage Burland and Nick Nyquist will join the AppleSox this summer, Head Coach AJ Proszek announced, Tuesday,

WENATCHEE, Wash. – Two more Gonzaga Bulldogs will join the AppleSox in 2015, Head Coach AJ Proszek announced Tuesday.

Gage Burland and Nick Nyquist will join the AppleSox following their freshman seasons in Spokane.

“I love the support we receive from Gonzaga,” Proszek said. “They always try to send quality players and individuals our way.”

Burland, a native of Otis Orchards, Wash., will join the AppleSox as a right-handed pitcher. He played high school baseball at East Valley High School.

“Gage is a very talented right-handed arm,” said Proszek. “Gonzaga expects him to pitch a lot for them this season, throwing in the low-to-mid 90s. He’s a good competitor and a hard worker.”

Burland started all four years at East Valley High School and was named First Team All-State and League MVP, his senior season. He offered 64 innings as a senior and compiled a 0.75 ERA, with 96 strikeouts. He was a First Team All-League selection each year following his freshman season.

This year he has made five appearances in relief for the Bulldogs, and has a 2.08 ERA – fourth-best amongst Gonzaga relievers. He has thrown 4 1/3 innings, and has struck out five batters. He has allowed only two walks. Opponents are averaging .214 against him, and have only collected one extra-base hit.

Nyquist, a native of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, will join the AppleSox as an infielder. He played high school baseball at Coeur d’Alene High School.

“He’s a big, physical kid,” Proszek said. “He’s still young and has a lot to learn, but he definitely is a promising talent. I had a chance to coach his older brother at Spokane Falls and he comes from a great family of hard working kids. He will play the game the right way, is a great addition to what we are trying to do, and will fit in great.”

A four-year letter winner at Coeur d’Alene, Nyquist was the Idaho Gatorade Player of the Year in 2014 and was also named the Idaho Hall of Fame Baseball Player of the Year. During his senior season he hit .506 with six home runs and 34 RBI. Nyquist was a First Team All-State and First Team All-League selection from 2012 to 2014. As a junior, he compiled a .435 average with eight home runs and 32 RBI.

Nyquist is hitting .364 in 4 games for Gonzaga, including 2 starts. He has four hits in 11 at bats and has driven in one run on the season. He has a .364 on-base percentage and owns a .958 fielding percentage.

SECOND GO AROUND: THREE 2014 APPLESOX NAMED TO 2015 SQUAD

AJ Proszek and the AppleSox will look to returners Hunter Wells (left), Kyle Vanderkin (center), and Colton Loomis (right), for leadership in 2015.

AJ Proszek and the AppleSox will look to returners Hunter Wells (left), Kyle Vanderkin (center), and Colton Loomis (right), for leadership in 2015.

WENATCHEE, Wash. – After the AppleSox fielded a team of fresh faces last summer, three members of the 2014 AppleSox will return to the Wenatchee Valley this summer, AppleSox first-year Head Coach AJ Proszek announced Monday.

Colton Loomis, Hunter Wells, and Kyle Vanderkin will all make their way back to Paul Thomas Sr. Field to rejoin Proszek.

Loomis, a Cashmere, Wash. native, currently pitches for Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa, Idaho.

He is 2-1 this season for NNU and has pitched at least six innings in each of his outings. He has a 2.75 ERA with 13 strikeouts to just one walk.

In 2014, Loomis accumulated a 3.58 ERA with the AppleSox, while hurling 42.2 innings in 14 games. Mostly a reliever last season, Loomis started two games and struck out 30 batters. His 17 allowed earned runs tied for fifth-lowest amongst AppleSox pitchers with 20-plus innings pitched.

“I’m very excited to have Colton back,” Proszek said. “I had the privilege to coach Colton for two years at Spokane Falls Community College before he transferred to NNU this year. He’s what I look for in a baseball player. He’s a hard-working kid, he competes, whatever you ask him to do, he’s going to do it to the best of his ability, and he definitely leads by example.”

Wells, a native of Spokane, Wash., is a Gonzaga pitcher who transferred to the Bulldogs from Lower Columbia College. He sported a 5.09 ERA through 11 relief appearances, last summer.

His 34 strikeouts ranked fifth amongst AppleSox pitchers, and he had the highest batting average of all Wenatchee hitters in 2015. Wells came through with an extra-inning infield single, July 28, to catapult the AppleSox to a 14-inning win in Bend. He was substituted into the game as a left fielder the inning prior to his at bat.

Wells has appeared in two of Gonzaga’s eight games this season, tallying 2.2 innings out of the bullpen. He has struck out two batters, while walking one of the seven he’s faced. He has yet to surrender a hit.

“The best word for me is privileged to have a guy who is going to be helpful out of the ‘pen for us and eat up some innings, but also show the guys what I’m looking for,” Proszek said. “When I’m spending time with position players and hitters, he and Colton Loomis can help out with directing traffic a little bit. He can make sure guys are getting things done and showing them how I want it done.”

Vanderkin, a native of Forest Grove, Ore., saw limited action on the diamond for Wenatchee in 2014 as he worked out the details of his transfer from Clark Community College to Gonzaga.

He was extremely productive for the AppleSox, finishing with a .321 average, while drawing 24 walks. His walk numbers were third-best amongst AppleSox hitters, however, the two players who ranked ahead of him averaged 45 games played, while he saw action in just 17 contests. He also ranked top-25 in the league in total walks, despite finishing with the fewest games played amongst the leaders. He has yet to play this season for the Bulldogs.

“I’m excited to get Kyle back,” Proszek said. “He came in late last summer, due to injury, and did a great job showing up and filling in right away. It was a little hectic on his end, just because he was traveling a lot, still taking summer classes and trying to get all the paperwork ready to get into Gonzaga. He didn’t get to spend as much time as he probably would’ve liked, or we would’ve liked on the practice field or on the road. He has a great eye at the plate, has an understanding of what he’s trying to do, and will be a great addition to what we are trying to accomplish. We are lucky to have him.”

Wenatchee opens its season with a two-game nonleague series against the San Francisco Seals, June 4-5, at Paul Thomas Sr. Field. Tickets can be purchased by calling 509-665-6900, or by visiting: http://www.applesox.com/tickets/

The Seattle Mariners Caravan will visit Pybus Market, Jan.13 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

WENATCHEE, Wash. - The Seattle Mariners will swing by Pybus Market for a free event from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 13 to promote the organization and upcoming 2015 Major League Baseball season.

The Mariners Caravan will set off to visit cities across the Pacific Northwest during January. The caravan will make stops in five WCL cities, including Wenatchee.

Select Mariners players will deliver the DREAM Team message to youth throughout the Wenatchee Valley, while signing autographs.

The Mariners will be represented by Danny Farquhar, Dominic Leone, and James Jones. Farquhar and Leone helped anchor the best bullpen in the majors last season, and Jones was one of the most promising call-ups for a Mariner team that fell just one game shy of a postseason appearance.

Aaron Goldsmith, one of the team’s radio broadcasters, and Mariner Moose, the team’s mascot, will also join the players to provide entertainment for the whole family.

The Wenatchee AppleSox will have a member of the 2015 team in attendance, as local product Kyle Blankenship will join the pros for the afternoon. Blankenship will also sign autographs and a limited number of 2014 AppleSox team-autographed posters also will be available.

Grand Performance Leads Pippins Over Sox

WENATCHEE, Wash. – Vince Fernandez's WCL record-setting tenth home run, gave the Yakima Valley Pippins (35-19) a win to cap their season, 4-1 over the Wenatchee AppleSox (34-25, 30-24). To make things sweeter for the Pippins, the home run was a grand slam.

With the granny in the seventh inning, Fernandez also broke the WCL single-season record for RBIs (new mark: 51).

The AppleSox drew first blood on Sunday. Michael McCann was able to sacrifice home a run on a bunt, following three leadoff singles by the AppleSox lineup.

Wenatchee would be stifled from that point on, as Gabe Gentner, Mitch Yada, Connor Lau, and Justin Jacobs would combine to hold Wenatchee to just two more hits. The AppleSox were retired in order for the final third of Sunday’s contest.

Fernandez gave the Pippins all they needed in the seventh, as he hit the grand slam off of Hunter Wells. The bases were loaded on a Harrison Ramey walk and a Justin Jacobs single, coupled with a Kyle Thomson bunt single.

The AppleSox end the year at 30-24, and while head coach will miss the playoffs for just the second time in his AppleSox coaching career (and first time in WCL play), he still has tallied a winning season in each of his fourteen seasons as skipper of the Sox.

Knaggs’ career coaching record as the AppleSox head man is 496-274.

Wenatchee’s players said their goodbyes for the summer during Sunday’s postgame. Most will return home or to their colleges on Monday or Tuesday.

The AppleSox would like to thank all of their fans, host families, personnel, sponsors, and the local and national baseball community for another great season of AppleSox baseball.

The 2015 baseball season and the chance to once again, “Celebrate summer one inning at a time,” can’t come soon enough!

Pippins Extinguish AppleSox Playoff Hopes

WENATCHEE, Wash. –  For the first time in twelve years, the Wenatchee AppleSox (34-24, 30-23), will not be headed to the postseason, as the Yakima Valley Pippins (34-19), extinguished the final playoff flame for Wenatchee with a 7-6 win in ten innings on Saturday.

The Pippins jumped out to a first inning lead, Saturday, as Shawn Wardian and Mitch Skaggs combined for the opening run on two singles and the Skaggs RBI.

In the third, AppleSox starting pitcher Tyler Frost helped out his cause and evened the score at one, with a big solo home run to right field.

It was Vince Fernandez that ended up stealing the home run show on Saturday, though. Fernandez sent a two-run home run over the center field wall for his eighth of the season.

He wasn’t done, as he’d rise up for an encore in the sixth with a solo shot to dead center for a 5-4 Pippins lead. The second tie-breaking home run was his ninth on the year and it ties the WCL single season record for most home runs in a summer.

The AppleSox previously evened the score at four in the home half of the fifth, as a Sam Brown 2-RBI single and a Ty Jackson RBI ground out gave the AppleSox three runs.

In the seventh, the AppleSox took back the lead in the see-saw battle, as two runs came home to score on a Michael McCann bunt single and subsequent throwing error to first.

The AppleSox would be done scoring though, as the Bend-Klamath Falls score went final. With the Elks beating the Gems 10-2, the AppleSox knew they had to beat Yakima Valley to keep a final night of playoff hopes alive.

Yakima Valley would douse those hopes in the eighth inning, as a Ryan Yamane sacrifice fly brought in the tying run.

The 6-6 tie would hold until the tenth inning, when Yamane brought in another run on a second sacrifice fly, again to left field.

The AppleSox went quietly, one-two-three in the bottom of the tenth as Kenny Rosenberg completed his win.

With the loss and the Bend win, Bend will face Bellingham in the divisional playoffs and Corvallis will take on Yakima Valley. The AppleSox will miss the postseason for the first time in WCL history and the first time in the last twelve years.

The AppleSox conclude their season with “Community Appreciation Day,” Sunday. Host families and the best fans in the WCL will be at Paul Thomas Sr. Field for the final 2014 showing for the Boys of Summer.

First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. and Brandon Bailey will take the mound for the AppleSox.

Late Inning Heroics Help Even Wild Card Race

WENATCHEE, Wash. – For the second straight night, Ty Jackson provided a go-ahead RBI for the Wenatchee AppleSox (34-23, 30-22), but this time it was in the eighth inning instead of extras. The AppleSox went on to beat the Yakima Valley Pippins (33-19), 8-6 to even the WCL Wild Card race.

The Pippins were red hot coming into Friday night’s match up. Riding a ten game win streak, Sam Brown knew the perfect way to cool off Yakima Valley. He lasered a two run home run just over the top of the right field wall for a 2-0, AppleSox lead.

Wenatchee added one in the second on a bases loaded walk, as Pippins starter Matt Trask began to fall behind.

In the fourth inning, Yakima Valley pushed across their first run of the game. A Vince Fernandez single, with a runner at second, brought Mitch Skaggs home from second.

The AppleSox promptly answered as Sam Brown singled home another AppleSox run, with Saturday’s starter, Tyler Frost, coming across to score one of his three runs in the game.

Yakima Valley came back with one more in the top of the fifth and evened the game in the bottom of the sixth off of Travis Cook, as Clark McKitrick’s base runners came around to score, following two one-two-three innings for the southpaw.

A Troy LaBrie 2 RBI single, evened the contest at 6.

The AppleSox made their final push in the bottom of the eighth, as the score of the Bend-Klamath Falls game went final.

Klamath Falls needs to beat Bend twice, paired with an AppleSox sweep, in order to earn Wenatchee the wild card.

Brown walked and reached second on a great read of a wild pitch in the dirt. Jackson then singled Brown home from second on a knock back up the middle. A double for McCann scored Jackson and gave the AppleSox an 8-6 lead.

Travis Cook held on in the ninth, allowing just a single (however, it was almost robbed by Brown, who attempted a diving catch in left center). He followed the base hit up with a strikeout swinging and a ground out to second.

With the win, the AppleSox drew even with Bend record-wise. The AppleSox now just need to overtake Bend by one game in order to win the wild card. The easiest way to accomplish the task is by winning their final two and having Bend drop one of their last two.

The AppleSox will face off with Yakima in a big Saturday night contest with a first pitch at 7:05 p.m. Frost will take the mound for Wenatchee.
