Hoiland’s Season-Long Effort Not Enough Tuesday

Cam Hoiland tossed a season-high seven innings but the Wenatchee AppleSox fell to the Bend Elks, 4-1, on Tuesday night at Vince Genna Stadium.

Max Hartman recorded two hits for his 17th multi-hit game of the summer and drove in the AppleSox’ lone run with a single in the fifth.

Hoiland (1-2) surrendered three runs and struck out three but suffered his second straight loss.

The Elks only collected nine hits but five came in the first two innings. A two-out 2-RBI single in the bottom of the second was all they would need but they recorded two more runs on a fifth-inning sacrifice fly and a wild pitch with the bases loaded in the ninth.

Despite the loss, Wenatchee (34-18, 16-9 second half) won the North Division second half title with two games remaining in the regular season. Victoria and Bellingham both lost their second-to-last games of the summer and cannot match the AppleSox’ 16 wins. This is the first time that Wenatchee has won the first half and the second half since the two-half playoff format was adopted in 2016.

Wenatchee Probable Pitcher: The AppleSox send Cam Hoiland to the mound for the first game of their final series this regular season… The incoming senior at Cal Poly is 1-1 with a 4.83 ERA, 16 strikeouts, nine walks and 23 hits over 22.1 innings in six games (five starts)… Hoiland surrendered a season-high four runs in 3.1 innings in his last start July 28 at Edmonton… Prior to that, he had allowed three runs or less in each of his outings…

Starter/Reliever Splits: AppleSox starters vs. relievers posted very different numbers over this past weekend’s series against Nanaimo… Wenatchee starting pitchers logged 16 innings and only surrendered five runs in that span… Two starters fired six complete innings and the three pitchers combined to record a 2.81 ERA… Conversely, the AppleSox used eights pitchers to cover the other 11 innings and surrendered 12 earned runs, good for a 9.82 ERA… Only two AppleSox relievers recorded scoreless appearances as Chase Hansen fired a scoreless seventh on Saturday and Andrew Monson recorded a six-out save on Sunday…

The Colossus Of Cloyd: Evan Cloyd continued his dominant summer with his third home run on Sunday… He has hit eight home runs in three West Coast League seasons after smacking five over the previous two summers in Portland… Sunday’s long ball extended Cloyd’s on-base streak to 25 games… The only game this summer that he did not reach base in was his season debut June 26 as a pinch hitter…

If The Season Ended Today: The AppleSox would face the Victoria HarbourCats in the North Division Series… Victoria currently holds the second wild card in the North Division by possessing the fourth-best record in the North Division overall… The HarbourCats are 2.5 games back of Wenatchee for first place in the second half… If they tie with Wenatchee in the second half then they will be the second seed in the Division Series and would not face the AppleSox… Wenatchee won four-of-six games vs. Victoria this summer and would face them in the postseason for a second straight season…

AppleSox Earn 12th Series Win of 2024

Quincy Vassar tossed six shutout innings and Evan Cloyd homered as the Wenatchee AppleSox defeated the Nanaimo NightOwls, 6-3, on Sunday night at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium.

Vassar (4-3) matched season-highs in strikeouts (six) and innings to record his third straight impressive start. He has tossed at least five innings in each of his last three starts and has only allowed one run over his last 17 innings.

Andrew Monson stranded the tying run in scoring position and fired a 1-2-3 ninth to lock up his second save of the summer.

Cloyd crushed his third home run of the summer after a one-out error in the bottom of the first to give Wenatchee (34-17, 16-8 second half) a 2-0 lead. The AppleSox never trailed or were tied from that point on.

Wenatchee added necessary insurance in the sixth on a RBI double from Jonathan Fitz to score Aidan Dougherty after his leadoff single. James Castagnola also scored from first on the ply as the throw to second to get Fitz was off target.

Nanaimo scored three times in the top of the seventh but Wenatchee got two of the runs back in the eighth when Jake Larson put down a successful safety squeeze bunt to plate Castagnola from third and Hunter Friedberg hit a two-out RBI double.

The AppleSox locked up home-field advantage for the North Division Championship Game if they reach it. Bellingham is the only team that can finish with the same overall record as Wenatchee but the AppleSox own the tiebreaker by having a .690 winning percentage in divisional play compared to the Bells’ .644 mark.

The postseason begins on Saturday when the AppleSox will travel to face whoever earns the fourth seed. Wenatchee will host Game 2 on Sunday at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium and Game 3, if necessary, Aug. 12. Tickets for Game 2 are available at AppleSox.com/schedule.

AppleSox Drop Rare Home Game

The Wenatchee AppleSox lost for only the eighth time this season at home with a 10-1 loss to the Nanaimo NightOwls on Saturday night at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium.

A night after scoring 10 runs the AppleSox were held to just one run and their four-game winning streak came to an end. Wenatchee (33-16, 15-8 second half) collected five hits, committed two errors and walked nine batters.

The AppleSox scored their only run in the second when Jake Larson led off with a double and scored after back-to-back groundouts. He also singled, walked and stole a base to record his third multi-hit game. That briefly tied the game before Nanaimo scored the game-winning run with two outs in the third.

AppleSox Rally In Middle Innings, Win Fourth Straight

The Wenatchee AppleSox erased a 3-0 deficit with 10 runs over the fourth and fifth innings to defeat the Nanaimo NightOwls, 10-7, Friday night at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium.

Wenatchee (33-16, 15-7 second half) scored four times in the bottom of the fourth and six runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good.

Ryan Martinez (2-0) allowed three runs over a season-high-matching six innings to earn the win for a second straight Friday.

Kanoa Morisaki put Wenatchee ahead for the first time with a two-out 2-RBI single in the fourth. His base hit up the middle scored Cam Hoiland and Brady Bean after they threw back-to-back walks before him. James Castagnola started the scoring with an RBI triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cooper Whitton.

Six AppleSox runs scored in the fifth despite only collecting two hits. Wenatchee cashed in thanks to two bases-loaded walks as well as a pair of two-out errors.

AppleSox Sweep Falcons To Cap Long Road Trip

The Wenatchee AppleSox earned their fifth sweep of the summer with a 3-0 win over the Kelowna Falcons on Wednesday night at Elks Stadium.

Caleb Costa (2-0) was terrific in his fourth start, striking out six in seven innings, both of which were season-highs. Costa got out of a one-out bases-loaded jam in the second with a strikeout and a ground out on a comebacker to keep the game scoreless. That kicked off a stretch of 11 consecutive hitters retired in order with three straight 1-2-3 innings to follow. He punched out four straight from the final out of the third to the last out of the fourth.

David James retired all six hitters over the final two innings to pick up his third save. He has not allowed a run in eight of 11 outings this summer.

Wenatchee (32-16, 14-7 second half) scored twice in the fourth and once in the seventh. Matthew Henning grounded out with runners at second and third to drive in the game-winning run before Max Hartman hit a two-out RBI single. Hartman scored his WCL-leading 46th run on a wild pitch in the seventh with two outs.

The AppleSox hold the best record in the North Division overall and in the second half heading into the final six games of the regular season. Wenatchee is off on Thursday before facing the Nanaimo NightOwls this weekend at home. Friday is Oktoberfest Night presented by Munchen Haus with brats, sauerkraut and fall beers available for purchase. AppleSox Sweep Doubleheader At Kelowna

Cannon Peery recorded seven hits and the Wenatchee AppleSox swept a doubleheader against the Kelowna Falcons on Tuesday night at Elks Stadium.

Peery singled three times and scored twice in Game 1 to help Wenatchee (31-16, 13-7 second half) earn a 7-1 win. He added four more hits in Game 2 as the AppleSox took home the 8-4 win.

Quincy Vassar (3-3) allowed one run in five innings in Game 1 to set the AppleSox all-time record for innings pitched with 124.2 over his three summers in Wenatchee. Micah Bujacich (1-2) fired three shutout innings in Game 2 from the second through the fourth innings.

The AppleSox never trailed Game 1 after putting up a two-spot in the top of the second thanks to a bases-loaded double play and a wild pitch with Peery at third. Evan Cloyd hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the third to extend the lead to 3-0.

The Falcons scored in the bottom of that same inning and nearly made it a one-run game in the fourth. A 2-out single looked like it might score a runner from second but Aidan Dougherty gunned him down from right field and Wenatchee played four runs in the sixth on a wild pitch, a sacrifice fly and a 2-RBI single by Jonathan Fitz.

In Game 2, Peery again scored twice and Dougherty added three hits of his own. Wenatchee trailed 1-0 after the first but never again after a four-run third. Evan Cloyd doubled in Dougherty after his leadoff double. Brady Bean and Kanoa Morisaki drew back-to-back bases-loaded walks later and Hunter Friedberg hit a sacrifice fly.

Kelowna again answered in the bottom of the third before Fitz doubled in a man to get the run back. The Falcons cut the deficit to one with a two-run sixth on five straight singles to start the inning but Andrew Monson struck out back-to-back hitters to get the final out and stranded the tying and go-ahead runs on the bases. An error, a Dougherty RBI single with the bases-loaded and a ground out gave Wenatchee breathing room again in the seventh and helped seal the victory.

Head coach Mitch Darlington has now won all four of the doubleheaders that the AppleSox have played since he became head coach in 2022.

The AppleSox earned their 11th series victory and now look for their fifth sweep on Wednesday in the series finale. First pitch at Elks Stadium is at 6:35 p.m.

AppleSox Drop Weekend Series To Riverhawks

The Wenatchee AppleSox scored in the top of the first for a second straight game but fell to the Edmonton Riverhawks, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon at RE/MAX Field.

The Riverhawks scored four times in the second inning on five consecutive singles to take the lead for good. Evan Cloyd hit a two-out RBI single five batters into the game and Aidan Dougherty delivered an infield single in the eighth. Dougherty recorded three hits and stole his team-leading 19th base to record the third-most stolen bases in a single AppleSox season.

Wenatchee (29-16, 11-7 second half) was held to five-runs-or-less for the fourth time in the last five games. It hit into two double plays and five over the two weekend losses.

The AppleSox continue the road swing at Kelowna Monday night when they face the Falcons at 6:35.

AppleSox Can’t Hold Early Lead At Edmonton

The Wenatchee AppleSox scored twice in the first inning but fell to the Edmonton Riverhawks, 8-2, on Saturday night at RE/MAX Field.

Edmonton struck five times with only two hits in the bottom of the sixth to break a 2-2 tie. A pair of infield singles as well as a bases-loaded hit by pitch preceded a 2-RBI single. The Riverhawks tied the game in the bottom of the fourth after the AppleSox failed to strike with the bases loaded and one out.

James Castagnola extended his hitting streak to six games with his fourth consecutive multi-hit game. He drove in the game’s first run with an RBI single in the top of the first. Evan Cloyd hit a sacrifice fly a batter later to give Wenatchee a 2-0 lead.

The two teams match up again at 12:05 on Sunday in the series finale.

Wenatchee Opens Six-Game Road Trip With A Win At Edmonton

Ryan Martinez earned his third victory in as many career appearances against the Edmonton Riverhawks as the Wenatchee AppleSox picked up a weekend-opening 7-1 victory Friday night at RE/MAX Field.

Martinez (1-0) matched a season-high with six innings and punched out a pair to earn his first win of 2024 and fourth in two seasons.

Aidan Dougherty tripled home three runs in a four-run seventh to help the AppleSox blow the game open. Cannon Peery and Kanoa Morisaki hit RBI doubles in the fourth to break a 1-1 tie and put Wenatchee (29-14, 11-5 second half) in the lead for good.

Dougherty stepped up to the plate with the bases-loaded and nobody out after three straight singles to open the seventh. He plated all three runners on a hot shot down the right-field line and then scored a batter later on a groundout. Dougherty has driven in 19 runs in 10 at-bats with the bases loaded this summer and his five triples are tied for the second-most in AppleSox history.

Both teams scored in the second with Wenatchee tallying the first run thanks to four walks. Three came with two outs and Morisaki brought in the run with his first of three times reaching base and first of two RBI.

The AppleSox and Riverhawks are evened up in the season series with two more matchups. Wenatchee looks to earn its 11th series victory of the summer Saturday night when it faces Edmonton again at 6:05.

AppleSox Earn 10th Series Win

The Wenatchee AppleSox rallied for three runs over the final two innings and defeated the Kamloops NorthPaws, 5-4, Thursday night at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium.

Wenatchee (28-14, 10-5 second half) improved to 12-2 in the third game of a series and 14-4 when being out-hit by its opponent as it won its fourth series in five opportunities in the second half. A day after being held to less than five runs for the first time since July 11, the AppleSox scored exactly five runs despite hitting .185 for the game.

James Castagnola led the offense with two hits, including a solo home run in the fourth for his second of the summer. Both of those home runs came in the series with the NorthPaws after he launched his first of the season Tuesday night. He tied the game up 2-2 in the fourth with the opposite-field shot.

The AppleSox scored first thanks to an Aidan Dougherty sacrifice fly in the first inning but would not hold a lead again until the eighth. The NorthPaws scored twice in the second on a pair of back-to-back two-out singles after two walks to open the inning. Kamloops regained the lead in the sixth before adding an insurance run on a pair of doubles in the seventh.

Wenatchee answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh before taking the lead again for good the next inning. Max Hartman hit an RBI single to the gap between first and second before Aidan Dougherty reached on a fielder’s choice a batter later to tie the game up, 4-4. Brady Bean drove in the eventual winning run on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth. Wenatchee filled up the bases with two walks and an error on a sacrifice bunt but only got one run.

Caleb Costa struck out three over a season-high five innings. Andrew Monson (5-0) surrendered a run in the seventh but recovered to toss back-to-back 1-2-3 innings to close out the game. He punched out five and moved into a tie with teammate Carson Boesel, Corvallis’s Kaden Segel and Edmonton’s Vicarte Domingo for the WCL lead in victories.

Wenatchee battles Edmonton on the road Friday night for the first game of a six-game road trip. The AppleSox dropped a home series to the Riverhawks two weeks ago for their only series loss of the second half. First pitch Friday night is at 6:05.
