Sox Steal Record Nine Bases, Win 8-3

The AppleSox stole a team-record nine bases on the way to an 8-3 win, Saturday.

The AppleSox stole a team-record nine bases on the way to an 8-3 win, Saturday.

LONGVIEW, Wash. – The Wenatchee AppleSox (15-19, 12-18) took the final game of a three game set with the Cowlitz Black Bears (16-19, 13-17), by a score of 8-3, Saturday night at Story Field.

The win ended a stretch of 12 AppleSox games played without an off day. The Sox had highs and lows during that span, but emerged with a confidence building win, to lead into an important upcoming six-game home and home set with the Kelowna Falcons.

Chris Carns (1-3), settled down very nicely for Wenatchee after allowing two Cowlitz runs in the first inning of the contest. Carns threw six innings, giving up just the two runs. His start was potentially cut short after six innings, because he was hit by a line drive in the AppleSox dugout in the top half of the sixth inning. He immediately was removed from action, and received care in Longview.

He was backed by a five-run fifth inning attack from the AppleSox offense, which included three of the team’s nine steals – a new single game team record.

Evan Douglas and Keston Hiura each provided sacrifice flys in the inning, and Nick Nyquist and Drew Helmstadter each chipped-in with two-out RBI. A balk also forced home a run.

Hiura finished going 4-for-4. His only half inning without a hit was in the fifth when he sacrificed. Hiura joins four AppleSox players atop the all-time single game hit records with four, after his performance Saturday. He also hit his third triple of the season in the eighth inning, now placing him one three-bagger shy of tying the team’s single season record.

Wenatchee added two insurance runs in the sixth on a two-RBI single from Sheldon Liikala. He scored Hiura and Mitchell Holland, who got aboard via a single and hit by pitch.

In the seventh, Jake Hirabayashi singled, took second on an error in left field, and stole third base before a errant throw from Cowlitz’s cather went down the third base line. He scored on the play, moving himself around the base paths. It was the fifth error of the night for Cowlitz’s defense, which entered play with a league-low .937 fielding percentage.

Dustin Hamilton, from nearby Castle Rock, Wash. got to pitch the final three innings in front of friends and family. He earned a save for his three-inning effort, giving up one run in the eighth on an RBI single for Bowen Ogata.

Hamilton struck out a new single game high seven batters, including his last man, who was down looking at the game’s final strike.

Wenatchee returns home for a day off Sunday, and returns to the diamond for six-straight against the WCL East leading Kelowna Falcons. The first three game set is at Paul Thomas Sr. Field, Monday-Wednesday this week, and the home and home pairing concludes in Kelowna, Thursday-Saturday before the All Star Break.

Cowlitz posted a four-run comeback in the ninth, Friday, to steal one from Wenatchee.

LONGVIEW, Wash. – The Wenatchee AppleSox (14-19, 11-18) scored three runs on two hits, and tossed eight shutout innings, but the Cowlitz Black Bears (16-18, 13-16),  still executed a ninth-inning comeback to win 4-3, Friday night at Story Field.

Friday’s game was off to a slow start – pushed back 30 minutes to 7:05 p.m. – after umpires got stuck in a traffic jam on their way to the park.

Wenatchee struck first in the third inning, with a 2-RBI double from Mitchell Holland, following walks of Jake Hirabayashi and Danny Amaral to open the inning. The double was one of two hits on the night for Wenatchee, which was enough for much of the game.

Layne Bruner settled down and pitched well for Cowlitz, meanwhile, Zach Haggett did the same for Wenatchee. It wasn’t Haggett’s sharpest start of the summer, but he was able to toss seven shutout innings, while holding Cowlitz to six scattered hits and an 0-for-8 mark with runners in scoring position. ‘

The AppleSox hit Cowlitz for another run in the eighth. The Black Bears expended four pitchers in the inning, and Jake Hawken (2-1) got the final out of the inning after a wild pitch scored the AppleSox third run. Wenatchee was walked three times in the eight and hit by a pitch en route to the run.

Tony Contonio (0-4), threw a scoreless eighth inning, before Cowlitz was able to work him into some tough situations in the ninth. The first batter in the inning walked, and then AJ Graffaino hit an infield single, and reached second on a throwing error. The lead runner, Bowen Ogata advanced to third on the play.

Contonio struck out the next two batters, without a run coming home to score. Then Cowlitz strung together three consecutive singles, including a game-winning single from Isaac Benard, which gave Cowlitz its second one-run win in as many days.

The series wraps up Saturday night at 6:35 p.m., as Chris Carns takes the mound for Wenatchee. The AppleSox will wrap up a string of 12-consecutive games played.

The AppleSox got four of the five runs they needed in the ninth inning, but fell just short with the bases loaded.

The AppleSox got four of the five runs they needed in the ninth inning, but fell just short with the bases loaded.

WENATCHEE, Wash. – The Wenatchee AppleSox (14-17, 11-16) used a four run ninth inning to get within one of the Bend Elks (25-5, 25-5), but the Elks stranded the bases loaded for an 8-7 win and series sweep at Paul Thomas Sr. Field, Wednesday night.

The Elks opened up with mighty scoring power in the first two innings. Bend landed six runs on seven hits and worked a couple walks off of AppleSox starter, Gage Burland (1-1).

The AppleSox were able to answer in the bottom of the second with their first run of the game. Kyle Vanderkin dropped in an RBI single to score Mitchell Holland, who got aboard via a double earlier in the inning.

In the top of the fifth, Brian Gadsby took over with one out, and a run already home on an Elks RBI single. He struck out each of the first two batters he faced out of the bullpen to open his relief appearance.

The AppleSox added a run back in the bottom half of the fifth on an RBI triple for Joey Jansen. His hit to right center field rolled all the way to the fence and was the second of three hits on the night for the redshirt junior outfielder.

The Sox also struck for a run in the sixth on Keston Hiura’s second home run of the season. He pulled it over the left field center fence for his first Paul Thomas Sr. Field home run. The AppleSox put together three-straight singles after the blast and loaded the bases with no outs. This pushed Patrick McGuff (5-0) out of the game, but reliever Mack Gaul saved his starter, retiring the next three batters on a pop up and back-to-back K’s.

The Elks got their only run off of Gadsby in the top of the seventh. A two out RBI double made the score 8-3 and Bend looked to have the game in control. Gadsby was extremely effective, outlasting his starter with 4 2/3 innings of work, and he struck out 8 batters during his stint.

Wenatchee waited until the bottom of the ninth to launch its final comeback bid. Down five runs entering the inning, Jansen started the inning with a single. An error on a dropped grounder at first base aided Danny Amaral, who won a foot race to the bag to place runners at first and second with nobody out.

Hiura then struck out in the next at bat, but an E2 on an attempted putout of a dropped third strike, scored a run (following a wild pitch), and the AppleSox had runners at second and third with the score 8-4. Wenatchee then flew out and struck out before generating some more offense. Nick Nyquist walked to load the bases and Vanderkin smoked a 2-RBI single to cut the Bend lead to 8-6. The RBI were Vanderkin’s second and third of the game.

Erik Sauve worked a walk to reload the bases, and Sheldon Liikala was hit by a pitch to make the score 8-7. The Elks lifted Jeff Albrecht at this point, and brought in Janson Junk, looking for the final out.

He found it as Jansen came back to the plate for the second time in the inning and struck out with the bases loaded to end the game.

Wenatchee was swept for the third time at home this season. They have swept two opponents at home this year as well.

Thursday, Wenatchee heads to southwestern Washington to visit the Cowlitz Black Bears at Story Field in Longview. Hunter Wells will get the start for the AppleSox in the first game of the early weekend series.

APPLESOX CLOSE HOMESTAND WEDNESDAY

The Wenatchee AppleSox (14-16, 11-15), fourth place in the WCL East, close their six-game homestand with the Bend Elks (24-5, 24-5), after the Elks won a nail-biting extra-inning game a night ago...the AppleSox are playing their 16th franchise season (11th in the WCL) and are led by first-year skipper, AJ Proszek (14-16) (.467), who is in his 3rd season with the Sox, after managing the pitching staff in 2013 and 2014...Proszek is assisted by Miles Kizer and Cory LeBrun, both in their first seasons.

LAST NIGHT
Tuesday night was an odd night at Paul Thomas Sr. Field...a quick rain and lightning storm developed out of the north, just minutes before game time, leading to a weather delay for 30 min. due to lightning in the top of the fifth inning...the AppleSox saw Jake Hirabayashi stay on an RBI rampage for the homestand...he picked up his third and four of the six-game stay and has five in total on the season...the top third and the bottom third of the AppleSox order were the largest contributors a night ago...the top had all five regulation-inning RBI...the bottom third was a combined  3-for-5 the first three times through the order, with two doubles, a sacrifice bunt, and four runs scored...the four five six hitters were hitless into the tenth inning, but rattled off three-consecutive singles after the AppleSox fell into a 7-5 hole...those three hits, a batter hit by pitch, and a fielder’s choice play on the infield resulted in a 7-7 tie, which would hold until the 12th inning...the game saw five lead changes and four tied scores...the AppleSox forced two of the lead changes and three of the tied scores.

WELLS NAMED CO-WCL PLAYER OF WEEK
Hunter Wells is rolling for the AppleSox...his 1.11 ERA is third-lowest in the WCL, his 33 strikeouts rank second amongst qualifying pitchers, and his four wins have him tied for first with Patrick McGuff, of the visiting Elks, for the league lead...Wells threw eight innings in a shuttout win over Klamath Falls, July 4, and only gave up four hits, while striking out six and walking two...he shared honors with West Tunnell, who was 12-for-26 last week for Bend, with 3 home runs, 8 runs scored, 8 RBI, and a .500 on-base percentage...Elks players have received at least a share of the honor in four of the last five weeks (Tunnell, Patrick Flynn, Cadyn Grenier, Tyler Davis).

LIGHTNING, EXTRAS, BACK AND FORTH BATTLE IN GAME TWO

The AppleSox and Elks battled tough on a night where all five WCL games finished were decided by a run; three games in extra innings.

The AppleSox and Elks battled tough on a night where all five WCL games finished were decided by a run; three games in extra innings.

WENATCHEE, Wash. – The Wenatchee AppleSox (14-16, 11-15) overcame three deficits Tuesday night, but still fell to the Bend Elks (24-5, 24-5), in 12 innings, 8-7 at Paul Thomas Sr. Field.

Early on in Tuesday’s contest weather was a factor. Light rain and windy conditions marked the contest from the beginning.

Bend took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Devin Kopas RBI triple. The AppleSox answered back with extra-base hits of their own in the third. Danny Amaral led off the inning with a double off the left field wall, followed by a Keston Hiura 2 RBI double  to the fence in right field, to give Wenatchee a 2-1 lead.

Bend tied the game in the fourth on a Derrick Chapman RBI single, and the AppleSox again answered quickly, scoring two in the bottom half on a 2 RBI double for Jake Hirabayashi; his first extra-base hit of the season.

Rain really started to pick up in the top of the fifth, and as the Elks scored two runs on a Tyler Davis double, a brief lightning storm passed over the valley, delaying the game for 30 minutes, just before the bottom of the 8 p.m. hour. The game was suspended with one out in the top half of the inning, tied at 4.

After the delay, the Elks immediately struck for a 5-4 lead. Cooper Hummel knocked home Davis on a double, and was later doubled up at second base after Amaral made a great running catch into the right center field gap for the second out of the inning. Hummel was sure it would get to the gap, and was a sitting duck back at second after Amaral showed his range.

The AppleSox had to wait until the sixth inning to even the score, courtesy of a Joey Jansen RBI single to left field. It brought home Sheldon Liikala, who stole second base before the hit.

The 5-5 score held through five innings and the game went to extras; the third game in WCL play Tuesday night to go past nine innings.

Bend looked to put the game away in the top of the tenth, with two runs off AppleSox reliever Sean Sparling, however, Wenatchee’s offense had an answer in the home half. Mitchell Holland, Evan Douglas, and Nick Nyquist (all previously hitless) rattled off three-consecutive singles to load the bases, before Drew Helmstadter was hit between the shoulder blades by Sam Boone (4-1), the Elks reliever. The score was 7-6, and Sheldon Liikala used a fielder’s choice play on the infield to tie the game at 7.

Kyle Blankenship (0-2) entered after Sparling twirled four innings, and gave up a lead in the top of the 12th. Cadyn Grenier delivered his first RBI of the game on a single to score Chapman, who would prove to be the game’s winning run.

The AppleSox got the tying run aboard in the form of Keaton Smith in the bottom half, but a groundout to third for Helmstadter ended the game. Daniel Bies faced the AppleSox in the final inning for the second time in as many nights.

Helmstadter was 2-for-5 with an RBI. He was the only AppleSox hitter to get multiple hits.

Tuesday’s game was upwards of four hours and saw five lead changes and four tied scores. Bend improved to 3-0 in extra-inning games, and the AppleSox fell to 2-4. The game featured five lead changes and four ties.

The AppleSox and Elks finish the series Wednesday night and it’s Kid’s Day at the ballpark, sponsored by Fred Meyer. Fans can pick up vouchers at the East Wenatchee Fred Meyer customer service counter, which will admit any child, 12 years of age or younger, to any Wednesday home AppleSox game this season. Gage Burland will be on the mound for Wenatchee. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.

The Bend Elks won their 23rd game in WCL play, Monday, a league-best mark.

WENATCHEE, Wash. – The Wenatchee AppleSox (14-15, 11-14) faced early troubles against the Bend Elks (23-5, 23-5), who loaded the bases in three-consecutive innings to open Monday night’s game at Paul Thomas Sr. Field.

The good news for the AppleSox was that the Elks were 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position through the first three innings, helping keep the game fairly close at 4-2.

Chris Carns (0-3), faced the early troubles, giving up five walks in three innings, and suffering three errors, including two of his own. He had trouble settling into a rhythm for Wenatchee.

The AppleSox scored their lone two runs in the second inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, Erik Sauve grounded into a double play that scored a run. Jake Hirabayashi followed it up with the AppleSox only RBI of the night, on a single.

The score held at 4-2 into the seventh inning, and Dustin Hamilton entered in the fourth inning, and began his relief appearance by retiring nine-consecutive Elks. He struck out six and didn’t walk any batters.

Jake Forrester (2-0) was strong for Bend. He pitched eight innings, allowing eight hits and the two runs. He struck out four and walked two on 111 pitches.

The Elks added two runs in the seventh and another in the ninth to pull away late, while the AppleSox offense just couldn’t quite come through.

APPLESOX TAKE SERIES ON FOURTH OF JULY

Hunter Wells tied for the WCL lead with his fourth win of the 2015 season, Saturday.

Hunter Wells tied for the WCL lead with his fourth win of the 2015 season, Saturday.

WENATCHEE, Wash. – The Wenatchee AppleSox (13-14, 10-13) blanked the Klamath Falls Gems (5-18, 5-18) in a 4-0 Fourth of July win, Saturday night at Paul Thomas Sr. Field.

AppleSox starter, Hunter Wells (4-0), was masterful once again, tossing wight shutout innings. He struck out six Gem batters, to bring his season total to 33 – one behind Yakima Valley pitcher Darrion Simons for the West Coast League lead.

Wells is just the second pitcher to reach four wins in the WCL, along with Patrick McGuff of Bend.

The AppleSox spread their scoring across four separate innings, and had four different hitters collect RBI.

Scoring started in the first inning when Mitchell Holland drove in UC Irvine teammate Keston Hiura for the game’s first run.

In the third inning, Hiura returned the favor, driving in Joey Jansen for a 2-0 lead. Jansen turned around in the fourth and plated Kyle Vanderking on another RBI single, and Evan Douglas did the same in the eighth, to give Wenatchee a 4-0 advantage, scoring Hiura for the second time in the game.

Michael McCall (1-2), the Gems’ starter, settled in nicely during the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, retiring the side in order in each of the frames. He left the game in the eighth having retired ten-consecutive batters.

Still, Wells and the AppleSox were too tough. Sean Sparling entered in relief in the ninth inning for Wells, who was sitting on 107 pitches. In the ninth, Danny Amaral stayed with a long fly ball to center field off the bat of Ty Wyatt and made the catch of the season, diving – full extension – to make an acrobatic catch on the fringe of the warning track.

Amaral almost turned two to end the game on the play. His throw – relayed through Kyle Vanderkin – was just late to catch a runner back at first base, who believed the line drive had no chance of being caught.

The AppleSox go for the sweep Sunday at 6:05 p.m. It’s Spaghetti Sunday, and fans can get a plate of spaghetti and a slice of garlic bread for $7.50 from the time gates open at 5 p.m., up until first pitch. Zach Haggett will be on the mound for Wenatchee.
