Oyama Wins WCL Player Of The Week
/AppleSox infielder Joichiro Oyama has been named the West Coast League Player Of The Week for the week of June 6-12.
Oyama’s .463 batting average leads all WCL players who have played at least nine games this year. He has collected at least one hit in all nine AppleSox games so far this year and has recorded eight multi-hit games, two of which have been three-hit nights. The Okinawa, Japan, native has been a big reason why the AppleSox have won five-of-their-last-six games and is hitting .520 (13-for-25) during that stretch.
Oyama is committed to UC Irvine this fall and is coming off a tremendous sophomore year at Merced. He won the Central Valley Conference Player of the Year award after leading the conference with a .409 batting average. He posted 25 multi-hit games for the Blue Devils and recorded 29 extra-base hits in 42 games.
Oyama and the AppleSox wrap up their first hometand of the summer tonight as they face the Northwest Star Academy at 6:35 p.m. at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium. The AppleSox will honor the Chelan High School varsity baseball team before the game after they finished fourth in state and won the Caribou Trail League. All Chelan baseball players, high school or youth, will receive free admission if they wear their Chelan baseball jersey to the game. Tickets can be purchased at saferseating.com.
