Peery Slam, Big Innings Help Sox Sweep NorthPaws

Cannon Peery hit a grand slam in the fifth inning and the Wenatchee AppleSox swept the Kamloops NorthPaws with a 15-5 win on Sunday afternoon at Norbrock Stadium.

Wenatchee (12-3) improved to 7-2 away from home and two games ahead of the Edmonton Riverhawks for first place in the North Division with 12 games remaining in the first half. The AppleSox extended their season-best winning streak to five games with a five-game fifth and a six-run ninth.

Peery drove in four runs for the second straight day one swing of the bat. His grand slam put a cap on five straight batters to reach and score with two outs in the fifth. Peery drove in eight of Wenatchee’s 38 runs over the last two days and recorded six hits as the cleanup hitter.

The AppleSox needed his slam and that big fifth inning to take the lead for good after falling behind two different times early on. A two-out RBI double in the first and a two-out solo home run in the second put the NorthPaws ahead, 3-2, until the fifth inning.

Luca Boscarino tripled in Peery after a leadoff single in the second and Boscarino came in to score on a suicide squeeze bunt single by Hunter Friedberg. The AppleSox used another bunt to tie the game up went Max Hartman reached on a drag bunt to plate Elijah Pelayo in the fifth.

Pelayo hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth and Antonio Gianni hit an RBI single in the seventh to add to the big offensive output. Five straight singles to open up the ninth inning pushed the game out of reach as 11 men came to the plate and six scored.

Wenatchee’s 12-3 start is its best start to a season since 2012 and is tied for the second-best start through 15 games in franchise history after a 14-1 start to the 2011 season. The AppleSox also opened the 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2009 season 12-3.

The AppleSox return home Monday night for a non-league game against the DubSea Fish Sticks before getting back on the road to face the Yakima Valley Pippins Tuesday-Thursday. Tickets for Monday’s game are available at applesox.com/schedule and it’s Mascot Night at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium.

Bats Awaken In Series-Clinching Victory Over Kamloops

Cannon Peery drove in four runs and finished a home run away from hitting for the cycle as the Wenatchee AppleSox defeated the Kamloops NorthPaws, 13-2, on Saturday night at Norbrock Stadium.

Quincy Vassar earned his first win of the summer with five strikeouts and only two runs surrendered in six innings. Vassar has now tossed at least five innings in 12-of-17 starts over the last three summers. Braiden Boyd tossed three scoreless innings to earn his first save of the summer and fourth in the last two seasons.

The AppleSox entered Saturday’s game with the third-most runs in the WCL but with only 43 over their last 10 games and a .223 batting average in that span. They erupted to record their third double-digit scoring effort of the summer and first since a 15-2 win against Port Angeles June 2.

Wenatchee plated six runs in the fourth inning and finished one run away from matching their most in an inning this season (seven in the second inning vs. Port Angeles June 2). Joe Scheffler and Aidan Dougherty recorded RBI singles while also pulling off a successful double steal to bring home Scheffler with the fourth run of the inning. Peery doubled in Dougherty for the final run of the frame.

Peery drove in the first run of the night and then the final two as well with a RBI single in the first inning and then a 2-RBI triple in the ninth. He came a few feet away from homering in the eighth before settling for a walk after the long foul ball off the left-field fence.

Dougherty also tripled in a run with a three-bagger to right-center in the top of the sixth before an RBI single by Max Hartman, who was then doubled in by Kade Benavidez to make it 9-0.

The AppleSox earned their fifth consecutive series victory in as many opportunities to open the season. They’ll look to earn their second sweep of the summer as they face the NorthPaws on Sunday afternoon at 2:05.

AppleSox Walk Off Bells To Win Series

Aidan Dougherty hit a walkoff double in the bottom of the 10th inning and the Wenatchee AppleSox defeated the Bellingham Bells, 8-7, on Thursday night at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium.

Elijah Pelayo led off the inning with a walk before going to second on an errant pickoff throw. Dougherty drove him in with a long fly to right-center field for his fifth hit of the night. Dougherty has recorded two of the eight five-hit games in AppleSox history in his first 10 games of the summer. He drove in each of the AppleSox final three runs.

Bellingham (6-6) tied the game up with a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning when it was down to its final strike to force extras. Wenatchee (9-3) only trailed once and held five different leads.

Matthew DelVecchio gave up three runs (two earned) while striking out three, allowing five hits and issuing three walks over five innings. David James earned the win with 2.2 innings out of the pen. He stranded two men in scoring position in the eighth and then struck out two in a 1-2-3 top of the 10th. Carter Seely tossed 1.2 scoreless innings from the seventh through the eighth and struck out three.

The Bells got on the board first thanks to a two-out error in the top of the first before Antonio Gianni responded with a two-out 2-RBI double in the bottom of the frame. Bellingham kept the two-out action going with a double to plate another run in the second. The AppleSox took a 3-2 lead in the second when Max Hartman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The Bells responded with a solo home run in the top of the third to cap the scoring in a chaotic first five half innings.

Luca Boscarino hit a sacrifice fly after Dougherty doubled to lead off the fifth to put the AppleSox back in the lead, 5-4. A two-out 2-RBI single in the top of the sixth gave the Bells their only lead of the night as Wenatchee answered in the bottom of the inning to get back in front. Jayden Holloway drew a two-out walk before Pelayo singled to right. Holloway rounded second for third and the throw over there went into the AppleSox dugout to tie the game before Pelayo scored a batter later on a single by Dougherty.

Dougherty gave the AppleSox an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to again score Pelayo after he singled and stole second to start the inning.

The AppleSox have won each of their first four series of the season and now travel to Canada to face the Kamloops NorthPaws this weekend at Norbrock Stadium. The series begins Friday night at 6:35.

Summers With The Sox Extra Special For Vassar

This story is featured in the 2024 AppleSox Program. View the full program now at applesox.com/program

The 2024 season represents the 24th summer of Wenatchee AppleSox baseball. Fans have been accustomed to a competitive, high-level team taking the field.

AppleSox fans are also accustomed to seeing a largely different team from one season to the next, which makes players like Quincy Vassar even more special.

This will be the third consecutive summer that he suits up for the AppleSox. Each time that he toes the rubber on a warm summer night at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium, Vassar fulfills a childhood dream.

“As a kid, playing for the AppleSox was always my biggest dream,” Vassar said. ”I know that not a lot of guys who play in the West Coast League get the opportunity to play three seasons, nevertheless, for the same team. I remember (former head coach) Ed Knaggs telling us when I was a kid at the camps that some of us might get the chance to play for the AppleSox one day if we worked hard enough. The older you get, the more you realize it could be a reality. It’s a blessing, and I’m grateful for it each summer.”

Vassar has carved up hitters in the West Coast League over the last two seasons. His 87 strikeouts are the most by any pitcher since the start of 2022 and are tied for the third-most in AppleSox history. Vassar has also eaten up innings, firing 82.1 innings, which are fourth-most among all WCL hurlers in the last two summers.

Not only has Vassar pitched a lot in the last two seasons, but he has also pitched in some noteworthy games for Wenatchee. The southpaw got the ball for Game 2 of the 2022 North Division Series, and he delivered seven strong innings, only allowing two runs while striking out eight.

Vassar also got the ball for the AppleSox’ next home game: the 2023 home opener at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium. The AppleSox lost the game but it was a game he sought the opportunity to get the ball and was thrilled to get the nod from head coach Mitch Darlington. He and fellow three-season AppleSox teammates Evan Canfield have both joked about who deserves to be the starter for the first game in Wenatchee this season. The connection between Vassar and his teammates as well as Darlington are big reasons for why he wants to keep coming back to play for the AppleSox.

“He has extremely good baseball knowledge,” Vassar said about Darlington. “He’s a younger guy, which makes him more relatable, especially for the older college guys.

“He just rides for us every single day. He’s not a coach who asks for your best and doesn’t give his best. Another thing I enjoy about Mitch is that, everyone makes mistakes on the field but he is the first to make up for any mistake that he makes. That’s a completely respectable thing from a coach. A lot of guys view summer as a time to get some reps or innings in but to him, winning is everything in Wenatchee. I wouldn’t have it any other way. That’s the way I want to play the game and that’s the way that he coaches the game. He’s super enjoyable to play for.”

A great example of the connection between Darlington and his players came last summer during the team’s annual Fan Fest. Vassar, wearing a microphone for a video later posted on AppleSox social media, went up to Darlington asking if he could take some swings during batting practice. Holding back a smile, Darlington sternly told Vassar that he didn’t want him anywhere near a bat all summer. Vassar pressed on, begging for a chance to earn a round of swings in batting practice every time he recorded a quality start (pitched at least six innings while allowing three earned runs or less). Darlington countered by wagering that he would let Vassar step in the cage so long as he fired a complete game shutout. It was a wager that Vassar deemed “unreasonable.”

Darlington appreciates bringing back a talented arm and a local product. The AppleSox skipper grew up in Leavenworth, graduated from Cashmere High School, lives in Chelan and works in Mansfield. As he seeks to bring the most talented players to the Apple Capital of the World, Darlington also wants to bring players who bleed AppleSox colors.

“I feel like Quincy is the kind of guy who summarizes AppleSox baseball,” Darlington said. “He’s that local kid who grew up watching the AppleSox and always wanted to be part of it. Now, he’s had his time the last two summers to be a huge part of us. He’s coming back to put his mark on not only the wins and the losses but also the record book, and he is creeping in on a lot of AppleSox records. He’s a guy who, when I look back at my first two seasons, I can’t help but look back and smile because of the dedication and commitment he has for the AppleSox. He’s always the first guy when the season ends who tells you he’s coming back when you haven’t even offered any contracts yet. It will be awesome to have him back for a third summer.”

Under Darlington’s leadership the AppleSox have tied for the fourth-most wins (64) and fifth-bestwinning percentage (.593) among the 16 WCL teams over the last two seasons. The AppleSox broke single-season team records for walks, runs, stolen bases and RBI in 2022 and then proceeded to break team records for home victories (21), home game winning streak in league play (12), three-game series sweeps (eight), most home runs hit in a league game (four on July 13) and walks drawn (299) in 2023. The 2023 AppleSox won 10 more games than the 2022 version and tied the franchise’s second-best regular-season record with 37 league victories.

Vassar has also been a big part of the team’s success. AppleSox starting pitchers tossed at least five innings in six of his nine starts last summer after achieving it in six of eight starts in 2022. His 42 strikeouts also tied with teammate Jadon Williamson for the seventh-most in the WCL.

Despite his success over the last two seasons, Vassar is still committed to continuously improving his game. While he lowered his ERA from 2022 (4.73) to 2023 (4.26), he issued more walks last season (28 in 44.1 innings) than he did two summers ago (12 in 38 innings).

Nevertheless, he doesn’t allow himself to be wound too tight. On a starting pitcher’s scheduled day to pitch, you will typically see them in the same spot at Paul Thomas Sr. Stadium, regardless of who the player is. In fact, you won’t see them until about a half hour before game time because they typically spend it alone in the locker room or in the dugout. Many pitchers prefer the quiet and the opportunity to mentally prepare for the evening.

Vassar is not like every other pitcher. He is very visible and undergoes many of the same normal activities of other players on game days. Many times last season, he enjoyed helping Canfield out with infield practice. Canfield would hit fungos to the infielder, and Vassar caught the baseballs thrown back in before tossing them back to Canfield to restart the cycle. That routine continues on days that he is the starting pitcher. Vassar knows that his success comes from his ability to stay focused and relaxed.

“I don’t understand the whole ‘it’s my start day, gotta isolate myself from the team,’ thing that some guys do,” Vassar said. “You’re just another player. It’s just your turn to pitch. Are you going to psych yourself out by sitting alone in the clubhouse for an hour, or are you going to chop it up with the guys who are about to play defense for you? Maybe you make ‘em laugh once, and maybe they make a good play for you. I just never understood isolating yourself. I don’t wear headphones when I warm up or any of that stuff. It’s about keeping the same mentality every day and preparing the same way regardless of what day it is or what situation it is. It becomes easier and more repetitive after that.”

This season will carry with it perhaps extra sentimentality since it is his final year of eligibility. Vassar has not completely committed to pitching in the spring of 2025, so this summer could be the end of his baseball career. What better way to wrap it up than by raising the WCL Championship trophy for his hometown team?

AppleSox Go 4-2 On Road Trip

Kade Benavidez drove in three runs and tossed three scoreless innings as the Wenatchee AppleSox defeated the Victoria HarbourCats, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at Royal Athletic Park.

Benavidez cleared the bases with a 3-RBI double in the sixth to help overcome a 1-0 deficit before being driven by an Antonio Gianni double. The 4-1 lead was enough as Joe Scheffler drove in an insurance run with the third of three straight singles in the ninth.

Benavidez retired the side in order in the seventh and ninth and stranded the tying run at second in the eighth. He struck out four, only allowed two hits and did not walk anyone in his first appearance in league play.

Quincy Vassar only allowed one run in four innings while starting on three days’ rest. He struck out four to move into sole possession of the second-most strikeouts in team history (94) and 17 away from becoming the franchise leader.

Gianni robbed what would have been a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning by leaping up to snare a ball hit deep to left. His catch kept the game scoreless after one frame.

Both HarbourCats runs and 11-of-13 runs in the series scored with two outs. All four AppleSox runs in the sixth inning also came with two down.

Benavidez plated five runs over the weekend against Victoria and now leads the West Coast League with 12 RBI.

Victoria’s home series loss to Wenatchee marked the first time that they lost a three-game series at Royal Athletic Park since July 19-21 vs. Bellingham.

The AppleSox return home on Tuesday to face the Bellingham Bells at 6:35 p.m. It’s the first $2 Off Tuesday with tickets and select concession items $2 off. Tickets can be purchased at AppleSox.com/schedule

Two-Out Runs Doom Sox Saturday

The Victoria HarbourCats scored seven two-out runs to defeat the Wenatchee AppleSox, 9-6, on Saturday night at Royal Athletic Park.

Antonio Gianni launched two home runs as part of a three-hit night. He crushed a 343-foot two-run shot in the fourth and then a 374-foot blast off the scoreboard on the first pitch of the eighth inning. Aidan Dougherty led off the ninth with a 379-foot solo shot for his first long ball of the summer.

Kade Benavidez also recorded two hits with an RBI single in the first and a double in the second. He got the scoring started with his team-leading ninth RBI of the summer two batters after Dougherty opened the night with a first-pitch swinging double.

Benavidez scored a run via a one-out double and then an error two batters later to tie the game up in the fifth. Victoria took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame on a two-out bases-clearing double to make it 7-4.

The HarbourCats scored two runs with two outs in each of the first two innings to take a 4-1 lead before the AppleSox erased it briefly in the fifth. Victoria added two runs in the seventh on a one-out 2-RBI single before Wenatchee solo home runs in the eighth and ninth.

The two teams match up Sunday afternoon at 1:05 in the rubber match and final game of the AppleSox’ six-game road trip before facing Bellingham at home on Tuesday night.

AppleSox Spoil HarbourCats Home Opener

The Wenatchee AppleSox won their third game of a six-game road trip with a 3-2 win in 12 innings on Friday night at Royal Athletic Park.

The AppleSox matched a franchise record by punching out 17 hitters for the third time in team history. Carter Seely struck out six in five scoreless innings after Evan Canfield punched out nine over five innings. Carson Boesel induced a game-ending double play with the tying and winning runs on base to wrap up two innings of shutout relief.

Wenatchee’s bats only collected three hits over the first 11 innings but only needed two in the 12th to take its first lead of the game. Damon Gaither recorded a leadoff single and pinch runner Jack Johnson scored three batters later on a two-out RBI single by Antonio Gianni.

The HarbourCats scored two early runs thanks to back-to-back walks with two outs and then a throwing error on a double steal in the second before a double and a single with two outs in the third made it 2-0.

Kade Benavidez helped tie up the game by doubling in Max Hartman after a hit by pitch to open the seventh. Benavidez scored tagged up and advanced to third on a fly out and then scored on a wild pitch.

Seely retired 10 straight hitters at one point beginning in the seventh after back-to-back hitters reached on a walk and catcher’s interference with one out. He struck out the next batter and induced a fly out to right to retire the side and then did not allow anyone to reach again until a two-out hit by pitch in the 10th but he stranded the potential winning running at second with a groundout.

Boesel (2-0) stranded the would-be winning run at third in the 11th after a one-out walk, stolen base and a balk thanks to a groundout to second. Victoria put two aboard in the top of the 12th thanks to the leadoff man reaching on an error and then a one-out walk before an around-the-horn double play to end the game.

Wenatchee faces Victoria again at 6:35 on Saturday night. A win in either of the final two games of the weekend would give the AppleSox a series win and a winning record on the road trip.

AppleSox Suffer First Loss Of 2024

Joe Scheffler recorded four hits but the Wenatchee AppleSox lost to the Port Angeles Lefties, 8-4, on Wednesday night at Civic Field.

Wenatchee (4-1) took two different leads but could not hold either of them. Scheffler had four singles as the ninth hitter in the order in a perfect night at the plate. Braiden Boyd tossed 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.

The AppleSox could not overcome allowing five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. They led 4-3 entering that frame and previously could not keep a 3-1 advantage. Wenatchee committed four errors for the second straight game.

The Lefties took the lead for good with a big bottom of the sixth as 11 men came to the plate. AppleSox pitching walked eight hitters in the game and three in that inning.

Their big inning came after Wenatchee took a 4-3 lead on a bases-loaded walk in the top of the inning. They scored their other three runs in fourth thanks to a two-run double by Fred Buckson and an RBI single by Scheffler in the ninth.

A two-out double plated the Lefties’ first run in the bottom of the third and then a ground ball to second that looked like a sure double play instead got through and scored two runs.

The AppleSox face the Lefties in the rubber match on Thursday night at 6:35 at Civic Field. Matthew DelVecchio gets his second start of the summer after firing 3.2 innings last Saturday.
